Trends in Office Design: Creating Fun and Relaxation Spaces

As the role of the office continues to change, especially after the Covid pandemic, office design has continued to evolve along with it. Commercial designers are redefining the traditional office environment, aligning it with emerging needs and priorities from both users (employees) and companies (employers).

OFFICE DESIGN TRENDS

The workspace isn’t what it used to be — it is no longer a place where people come to work every day and then head home. Today, the way we utilize workspaces has changed, and this shift is influencing how we design offices. As a result, new office design trends have emerged.

DYNAMIC AND COLLABORATIVE SPACES

Modern workspace trends are moving towards more dynamic and collaborative spaces. They’re more about balancing both work and personal life, with the focus on employees’ well-being. This change highlights how important it is to create a workspace where people can not only work well, but also feel healthy and happy.

FUN AND RELAXATION SPACES

One of the current office design trends that is becoming more popular is the addition of fun and relaxation spaces to the workspace. This includes areas and amenities for social interaction, where users can not only refresh but also recharge. It is now essential to consider these elements when designing office spaces.

These break and multi-purpose areas range from game lounges and cafes to massage rooms. Of course, the choice of functions depends on the available space and the company’s priorities.

However, including such leisure amenities where busy employees can relax and move about creates an inspiring environment that promotes happiness and reduces stress on a day-to-day basis.

LOUNGE AREA DESIGN

Recently, we were tasked with the interior renovation of an office building space in Boca Raton, FL. After reviewing the existing conditions and working on space planning, we decided to incorporate this office design trend to achieve our client’s goal of promoting a work-life balance within the building.

We chose the space in the basement of the building where the restaurant was located, which was empty and lifeless. The renovation included the addition of lounge, restaurant seating and a ping-pong area, as well as phone booth-style meeting rooms.

We wanted to transform the space into more than just a place to grab lunch. We create a venue for social interaction and relaxation, where workers can experience a change of environments from their own offices, benefitting from the building’s community approach during their breaks.

This lounge area was intended to provide a relaxed environment, complete with a game area for enjoyment. That’s why we incorporated two comfy sofas and chairs where users can sit down to disconnect or interact with coworkers through a game of domino or Uno during their lunch break. This is also where we chose to place the ping-pong table.

SEATING AREAS – RESTAURANT

We wanted to create a seating area where employees can enjoy lunch, take calls or have a conversation in a different environment. With this in mind, we crafted dynamic seating options, incorporating bar stool tables, regular tables, and a custom bench for a mix of comfort and versatility.
