Polanco Interior Opulence: How Residential Lighting Designers Brightened Up Our Project

Have you ever been in someone’s home and you feel like there’s not enough light? Or maybe it’s too bright, which can be worse. Well, lighting can have an enormous impact on a space, but it’s also one of the trickier elements of interior design. While we always pay close attention to lighting in our designsusing diverse types of modern lightingsometimes it’s best to bring in the experts: lighting designers.

These pros analyze spaces and create custom lighting plans that emphasize the mood of a home and make interior finishes, materials, and elements stand out.

Our Polanco penthouse project in Mexico City, the design of which is all about Polanco interior opulence, is one of those cases when we wanted to pull in a lighting designer. So, we’re collaborating with the Mexico-based lighting design studio Luz en Arquitectura to create lighting plans that will bring out extravagant designs to life.

First, we started by sharing the 7,000-square-foot home’s floor plan and reviewing our proposed materiality: marble, wenge wood, and dark metals. Then, the team at Luz en Arquitectura evaluates our plan, determining which proportions and materials, textured wood or smooth marble, to highlight that will take our designs to the next level.

Lighting designers, like Luz en Arquitectura, also take into account a room and a client’s functionality needs to ensure there’s enough lighting to cover these requirements. If a room lacks natural light, they’ll suggest where to install and which artificial light fixtures to illuminate the room just enough.

Here’s how the experts at Luz en Arquitectura helped us create the perfect lighting plan for our Polanco Interior Opulence project:

Main Living Space

Our design intent shows off the space in broad daylight with natural light filling the space. The space is a mix of dark wenge wood, glass partitions, a floating staircase, and eye-catching marble.

In Luz en Arquitectura’s lighting plan, you can see the space in all of its well-lit glory. Stair lights aren’t just practical (don’t want to be tripping at night!), they illuminate the beautiful design of the staircase and wood texture applied on the walls. Track lighting highlights architectural details, as well as the jaw-dropping floor-to-ceiling black marble, which might be lost in the darkness after the sun sets.

Home Office

The mostly gray color palette of this chic home office is brightened up by brass accents, including a task lamp, and the giant windows.

The team at Luz en Arquitectura chose to highlight the desk—key for working when the weather turns yucky or it gets dark outside. The bookshelves also get a little bit of love, too, in the form of accent lighting.

Kids Room

The custom bed in this little girl’s room is the showstopping centerpiece. Two pretty pink pendant lights provide symmetry, while the feature wall draws in the eye.

A square outline of ambient lighting lends warmth, while task lighting over the beds and desks can illuminate homework or bedtime reading for these little ones. Our favorite part of this lighting plan is the accent lighting that spotlights the wall art and beautiful wallcovering from Calico Wallpaper.
