Inspiration Around Every Corner: Design Week Mexico’s Design House
This month, we had the opportunity to attend the 10th edition of Design Week Mexico. We were so excited to be in Mexico City for five days to take in Mexico’s leading platform for design and architecture for the first time ever!
Design Week Mexico celebrated its 10th year with 20 main events and 100 more activities around the city. The program includes everything from exhibits and temporary installations to a featured design house and talks that empower the city’s creatives. Therefore, we found design inspiration nearly everywhere, and we loved it!
What made this event so special is that not only is Mexico one of our favorite countries—we love working there; check out our Polanco Interior Opulence and Modern Mexican Home projects—but this year Mexico City was named the World Design Capital. Because of this, throughout October, Mexico City became a host for local and international designers to discover a brand new world of fresh and inspiring ideas.
Interior Design Inspiration at the Design House
Our first stop was the design house—a nine-year Design Week Mexico tradition. Other interior design markets have featured design houses, including High Point Market, and they’re always such a sight to see!
Design houses bring together several interior designers to try out their most wonderful, out-of-the-box, and groundbreaking ideas. In this case, Design Week Mexico’s design house featured the work of 24 interior designers. The talented design teams transformed an unoccupied house into a playful retreat, merging design, architecture, and interior design.
This year, each one of the designers collaborated with showrooms participating in the “Ruta de Diseño” to restore a room or outdoor area inspired by well-known personalities from different social environments.
From the moment we stepped inside the design house, we were amazed by all the details. The welcoming entrance was full of greenery, reminiscent of an outside-of-the-city retreat, which we loved! Also, the outdoors were an important part of the design house. Each designer was tasked with the intention to complement the architecture, not compete with it.
As we followed the map of spaces and their corresponding interior design teams, we found inspirational details in every corner of the home. The different styles inspired us to not be afraid to explore materials, colors, incorporate lighting (natural and decorative), and how to use the existing bones of an old house to create limitless possibilities. Below you can see our favorite details and spaces from Design Week Mexico’s Design House:
A Glass Treehouse
This stunning structure blended modern with the endless greenery inspiring us to take another look at how we use the existing elements of a home to our advantage, rather than just changing them. The lightness and reflective quality of the treehouse are a playful exploration of immersing yourself in nature.
The Movement of Marble
We were so impressed and awe-struck at the marble swivel structures in the second-floor hallway. Representing the ability to change your perspective by adjusting your surroundings, like allowing different amounts of light to come into the home, these swivels were mind-blowing.
Brick and Marble Combo
Sure plenty of homes have marble countertops and exposed brick walls, but have you ever seen that combined on one wall?! We immediately fell in love with this detail in a hallway. It creates depth and interest by layering the new over the old and inviting you to continue exploring the design house.
Texture. Texture. and Texture.
If you read our interior design blog frequently, you know we’re huge fans textures. And Design Week Mexico’s Design House had so many examples of layering textures to create unique atmospheres. This space was full of eye-catching details like patterns on the flooring, marble in the walls and natural painted materials.
Here are some more of our favorite elements from the house. You can see how every space speaks a different style. Each of them has inspired us to create unique designs through the details. For example, the application of colors and materials, the use of greenery to embrace the indoor-outdoor connection, and bringing it all together in the perfect mix.
To sum up, if you have the opportunity you have to go to Design Week Mexico next year, go! Trust us. You will find lots of design inspiration. Additionally, you will get a chance to meet very inspiring people.
