Decorative Lighting Picks for Our Contemporary Oceanfront Project

As we make progress on the Contemporary Oceanfront Retreat in Ft. Lauderdale, we’ve taken you through the design concept and the main living areas. But now, we’re moving from the big picture to the little details that make a house a home, specifically lighting.

Our Contemporary Oceanfront project is all about the De Stijl movement’s minimalism, with a focus on lines and grids. All of those straight edges and a monochromatic color scheme make a home feel very harsh and masculine, so we aim to balance that out with beachy materiality, including a bleached oak wood that lends coziness and warmth.

The home’s strong architectural details, including a grid of marble slabs on the living room fireplace, are highlighted by a bold architectural lighting concept that was already in place when our clients came to us. Large round recessed ceiling fixtures are grouped to accent specific areas or walls on which the client will display his extensive art collection. There are also path lights that guide foot traffic throughout the home, adding a subtle accent lighting source. The main living and dining area features double-height ceilings, so the lighting designer specified that six long tracks with spotlights be installed.

Originally these fixtures were to be chrome, but we felt the bleached oak plank ceiling we added to the home needed more of a contrast, so the finish on the fixtures became black.

With all of this already solidified, it was up to us to create an accent lighting design that complemented the original concept and perhaps added a bit more femininity to the home. We chose fixtures from some of our favorite lighting brands, like Vibia and Foscarini, that made a statement, yet were clean and pure.

Vibia makes installation so easy—you don’t have to be a trained designer to hang the pendants. They provided a visual plan that made measuring simple.

BREAKFAST AREA

In the breakfast area, we selected Foscarini’s Spokes Suspension Lamps to hang above the iconic oval Saarinen table. We love the playful round shapes and the wire look of the collection—plus its pure, clean design suits our concept, while adding some soft femininity.

MASTER BATHROOM

In the second-floor master bathroom, we picked out the Cosmos  pendant to hover above the sculptural bathtub. The cluster of contemporary-hued round discs is the perfect organic-shaped element to contrast all of the straight lines and strong concrete (floors and countertops) in the space.

BEDROOMS

For all of the bedrooms, we played with an asymmetrical design, inspired by our Milan trip to Milan’s Salone del Mobile. On one side of the bed, we’ve clustered a group of pendants. On the other side, a sculptural table lamp or nightstand balances it out. We varied the brands and light fixtures, but the look is very much the same. All of them showcase our pure line concept with a touch of glass or round shape to lend femininity.

This bedroom features a pair of Tom Dixon Beat lights with metal shades in truly eye-catching shapes.

Similar to the interestingly shaped Tom Dixon pendants in another bedroom, this pair by Brokis is just as intriguing, but has smokey glass shades.

This pendant by Prandina continues the smokey color scheme, but offers a colorblocked look.

GUEST BEDROOMS

We switched up the guest rooms’ lighting to differentiate them from the others. In an effort to simplify the overall design, the light is the biggest design element in both rooms. Which fixture to showcase was easy. We all instantly fell in love with this fixture from Vibia and knew it would be the star of the show.

The piece is a sculpture in itself, adding major wow factor despite its minimalist design. We chose a white fixture for one guest bedroom, and black in the other.

You know the saying “beauty is pain”—well that’s not just true in fashion. It’s equally as true in interior design. This light fixture has a few different mounting points, so we had to coordinate the exact location onsite with our general contractor. It wasn’t an easy task (some would say a pain), but it’s going to be worth it. We can’t wait to see this piece installed!
