Tips for Designing a Condo Balcony
STYLE AND NEEDS
As interior designers, we understand that the outdoors is as important as the interiors in order to create a home. Just as we do for the interior spaces, we base our designs on the style and needs of our clients.
When we first visited the home that was to be our next interior design project, we noticed the balcony space. Our goal was to give it purpose, and in order to achieve that, we began by listening to and reviewing our clients’ needs and desires for this particular area.
When designing your balcony space, we recommend that you always start by thinking about how you envision yourself using the space and what specific elements it needs to achieve that vision. Another important item to consider is the style you want it to have. Once you have a concept, you can then set about making it a reality.

SPACE PLANNING
Once you have a clear vision for your outdoor area, it’s time to create an outline of the available space. Take a good look at its dimensions and layout, so you can understand the possibilities and limitations, and visualize how your design can fit within the given space.
We enjoy creating different zones or areas within this condo balcony that seamlessly flow into one another. The specific layout will naturally depend on the available space. However, including different furniture arrangements that serve various needs, such as reading, lounging, or dining, is key. That is how we approached this condo project, by designing two seating areas. Areas that included a dining zone to create a truly comfortable and multifunctional outdoor space.
MULTIFUNCTIONAL FURNITURE CHOICES
When designing an outdoor oasis in a small space, it is crucial to choose outdoor furniture that offers maximum flexibility by being adaptable to different activities. The goal is to create a versatile space that can be enjoyed in more than one way.
We recommend incorporating furniture that maximizes the available space, making the most of every inch. For example, the L-shaped sofa we included in this balcony offers ample seating while also allowing for an open feel due to its shape. It helps prevent the space from feeling closed off, providing a sense of openness.
You should also consider natural elements such as sun, wind and rain when designing your outdoor space. For example, it’s important to make sure your selections do not fly away due to high winds, or get damaged because of exposure to sun or rain.
WEATHER APPROVED SELECTIONS
If you live in a stormy region like south Florida, there’s an important consideration to keep in mind when selecting furniture and decor for your balcony space: weight and movability.
Storms can bring not only rain, but also high winds that can significantly impact your outdoor furniture. It’s so important to get guidance from your interior design team. They will help choose items that feature heavyweight materials, preventing them from being swept away. You should also select pieces that can be easily moved or relocated if needed, especially during storm season.
COLORS AND MATERIALITY
When selecting colors for your outdoor area, aim for a palette that adds both style and serenity. It is important to consider that the outdoors already features the beautiful colors of nature.
We recommend you take inspiration from the surrounding environment and complement it with hues that harmonize with nature’s palette. For example, soft greens, earthy browns, calming blues, and gentle neutrals can all create a tranquil and inviting ambiance.
When designing your outdoor space, consider selecting materials and finishes that are sun and rain resistant to prevent fading or damage from weather exposure.
