Designing the interiors of both commercial buildings and office spaces marks an exciting new chapter for the team at DKOR. Since we began creating commercial interiors, we’ve had the opportunity to be part of exciting projects that help business owners create exceptional commercial spaces that leave a lasting impression on all who experience them.

Commercial buildings vary from office buildings to mixed-use developments. One of the recently completed projects undertaken by our commercial team is an office building space located in the 1515 building in Boca Raton. This exciting project included the renovation of common areas such as the entry hallway, and the creation of new innovative spaces for tenants, such as cutting-edge meeting pods.

In this article, we focus on the specific area of a commercial project into which we infused new life: the entry lounge of an office building space. In addition to sharing some of the details of our design plan, we will also provide resourceful tips to guide you while designing your own commercial space.

AMENITIES MATTERS IN COMMERCIAL DESIGN

In today’s workplaces, especially office buildings, it’s clear that amenities make a difference! Lounges and casual areas are in great demand in office spaces because business owners understand how important it is to provide employees with a good balance of space options and boost their well-being during the workday.

Lounge and casual areas are spaces allocated in commercial buildings where users can not only take a break but also have a relaxing experience. In office spaces, they provide employees with a change of scenery in which they can step outside of their workspace and unwind, recharge, and connect.

DESIGNING INVITING LOUNGE AREAS

When we started this commercial project, we were presented with an empty and unused lounge area in the main entrance of the office building. Although there was a seating area with four chairs and some neglected greenery, the space was barely used because of its lack of functionality and comfort. It was a waste of space that our client wanted to make the most of.

The goal was to create a useful lounge space with users in mind, one that people would actually use. We wanted tenants and their teams to feel as if the space was made just for them, an area that was cozy and versatile.

LET’S GET INTO THE COMMERCIAL DESIGN TIPS!

We will share with you the factors we considered while creating this commercial design. Are you ready for the five main items you shouldn’t overlook when designing lounge areas in commercial buildings? Keep scrolling and get inspired with this casual lounge area design!

1. THOUGHTFUL AND FLEXIBLE SPACE LAYOUTS

Discovering Office Amenities: A Look at Commercial Spaces from Above

The first step in designing a lounge area is to analyze the space and determine how to make the most of it. The goal is to create a layout that’s not only efficient but also ensures a smooth flow and enough room for people to move around comfortably.

That’s why thoughtful space planning is one of the keys to success. You not only want to make efficient use of the space but also need to get creative in adding all the desired areas to the lounge.

Especially in a big open space, such as the one at the 1515 commercial building, our designers wanted to take advantage of all the available space. They also took care to ensure that the areas don’t feel crowded and difficult to navigate, since they are the first thing people see when entering the building.

Flexibility is also important in space planning. In this case, as you can see, we created four main areas. But no area is strictly designated for one specific task only. Instead, we planned a flexible space where employees can find everything from desk space to gathering areas.

2. COHESIVE AND INVITING DESIGN

You have heard us talk about the importance of maintaining a cohesive design in interior design. This is no different in commercial buildings!

Just think about it: when you keep things consistent – like using the same elements, materials, and colors – it makes everything feel like it belongs together. Just take a look around here! See how both the colors and materials flow smoothly throughout the area? It creates the impression that even though there are different sections, as a whole it feels like one big lounge space.

Using not only the same color palette but also materials in commercial interior doesn’t have to be boring. For example, take a look at the different colored circles in the red area rug. It’s not just there for aesthetic reasons; it actually helps define the main lounge areas. It’s the little touches like these that help maintain that cohesive vibe throughout.

3. SEATING ARRANGEMENTS

Strategic seating arrangements optimize the use of available space, transforming the lounge area into a functional and inviting area. As you can see here, we’ve divided it into four main sections: two lounges, a seating area, together with a bench spot. It’s not just about placing furniture randomly; it’s about envisioning how people will use the space and then crafting creative arrangements to meet those needs.

When working on space planning, it’s crucial to strategically position each area or arrangement. This not only encourages collaboration and interaction but also ensures clear pathways among seating areas and respects workers’ privacy when needed. It’s about finding that delicate balance where everyone feels not only comfortable but also engaged.

4. COMFY FURNITURE

Lounge areas are the heart of comfort in any commercial interior design plan. In other words, they are meant to be a comfy space; it’s what they are made for. That’s why it’s absolutely essential to choose and arrange furniture that’s as inviting as can be.

But comfort isn’t one-size-fits-all! For that reason, make sure to offer a variety of seating options. Some of us might prefer to take a break on a bench, while others find a low sofa seat the most comfortable. Our goal was to offer a variety of seating options. With this intention, we ensure that everyone can discover their ideal spot to unwind.

5. NATURAL ELEMENTS

Consider those moments when you feel most comfortable—many of them likely involve some connection with nature. Did you know that plants are scientifically proven to promote relaxation? That’s why being surrounded by greenery adds a refreshing sense of comfort to lounge and casual areas in commercial buildings.

With this in mind, in this commercial interior design plan, we strategically placed plants to define the entire lounge area, creating fresh natural screens that separate the elevator area from the bench area and the desk space zone from the entry.
