Modern Wonderland Reveal: The Open Concept Living and Dining Room

Last year we shared the design intent for the open concept living and dining room in our Bal Harbour Modern Wonderland project. Our client wanted their home to be a riot of color, pattern, and fun. Not only did she push the envelope, but she also pushed our design team to work outside of their comfort zone. Now it’s time to show off the finished design!

This beautiful residence showcases how our talented DKOR Interiors team can work with any style and translate our clients’ needs and ideas into a cohesive, well-designed home.

We call it a Modern Wonderland not just because of the colors but because of the fanciful way our client wanted to combine modern and traditional design. While this space—a combo breakfast nook and family room—looks more modern than traditional, check out the rest of the home in our design portfolio.

Our design team also used color theory to choose the colors for each space based on the feeling they wanted to evoke. In is open concept space, our designers chose green, bringing forth luck, generosity, and health. Since the family envisions spending most of their time in these spaces, the meaning behind green is very apropos.

Are you ready to see the final look? We sure are ready to show you!

The Breakfast Nook

Green dominates this breakfast nook design, from the Phillip Jeffries wallpaper and the upholstered banquette and chairs to the living plants that decorate the built-in shelves and are flourishing just outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.

We upholstered the banquette and the clients’ existing Knoll Platner chairs in a combination of fabrics: a large-scale moiré pattern in emerald from Zinc Textiles and a more demure gray.

We’re in love with the custom carpentry we executed in the space. It incorporates bench seating and plenty of storage. The cube-like shelves hold decorative objects, easy-to-maintain plants, and an espresso bar just for mom and dad. A small bronze sconce offers light to the cozy breakfast nook design.

The finishing touch for this space is plenty of pillows on the banquette to ensure the family stays comfy for hours of bonding over breakfast.

The Family Room

When designing an open concept living and dining room space, it’s important to tie the two together with overlapping elements. This family room steals its color palette—mostly gray with pops of black, white, green, and brass/gold—from the breakfast nook.

A large gray sofa and West Elm’s distressed area rug dominate the space, while black and white accessories (a bone inlay side table from CB2 and decorative box from Jonathan Adler) are reminiscent of the geometric shelves in the breakfast nook. The clients’ existing Missoni pillows and a few other gold-hued throws lend color and life to the mostly gray space.

The organic-shaped steel bar coffee table trio resembles the dining space’s Knoll Platner table and chairs; a subtle nod to the other room that keeps everything cohesive. Pops of green are included in an arrangement of succulents on the coffee tables.

The lighting in the room is a combo of modern and traditional. The flush-mounted ceiling light has a vintage-inspired look, while the ultra-modern floor lamp floats in the room, almost invisible against the white curtains.

Many of the accessories the DKOR Interiors team used in this open concept living and dining room were already owned by our clients. We love incorporating existing elements into our designs. It helps us stay true to our clients’ style—and stick to our budget!

We are so thrilled to have created this space for our clients and their family. We’re envisioning many Sunday morning pancake breakfasts and lazy movie nights in this cozy, all-encompassing space.

Stick around if you want to see more of this home! We’re sharing the rest of the spaces soon.
