Creative Family Room Ideas by Miami Designers You’ll Love

One of the most widely used rooms in a home, the family room is designed for enjoyment – a space where the whole family can come together and relax on the sofa or a favorite chair. Less formal than a living room, it is an inviting space where you can lounge your way through a rainy day, or watch a Netflix marathon of your favorite series. Creative family room ideas balance function and beauty to ensure every family member feels comfortable, cozy, and welcome — including children and pets.

If you are at the stage of designing a family room in your home, remember to keep it casual and liveable so that you can make the most out of the space. To explore what that means, we’re sharing some family room ideas designed by our team from previous residential projects as well as insight into what makes each room unique. We hope this family room inspiration sparks some new ways for you to bring joy into your home.

CREATIVE FAMILY ROOM IDEAS

STYLISH FAMILY ROOM

This stylish family room is sophisticated, yet functional with a minimal style that nods to city life. The timeless white sectional is a must-have for this room as it is large enough to fit everyone as they get cozy on movie night. On the wall above the sofa are three large framed family photographs, providing a personal touch in a room that is shared by everyone. On the opposite wall, our designers created a bespoke built-in shelving unit that is home to the TV, decorative objects, and favorite books. It also features clever storage below that can be used to hide board games and other forms of entertainment and a custom desk area that provides a functional work area.

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Family Room Design Tips by Interior Designers

While this family room project shares some of the same features as the previous, it has a completely different aesthetic. There is a large TV in this room, however, as it is housed within a built-in entertainment center that is also black, it blends in seamlessly. This family room takes inspiration from mid-century modern design style with classic pieces like a leather Eames Chair. The juxtaposition between the heavy, darker furniture and upholstery and the light, airy views of the beach creates an enticing contrast that feels timelessly cool.

CONTEMPORARY FAMILY ROOM DESIGN

Creative Family Room Ideas by DKOR Interiors

If you’re searching for creative family room design ideas, look for rooms that revolve around a large work of art, like in this Coral Gables’s residence. With a work of art as the focal point of this room, our designers pulled from the color palette to create a quirky and contemporary space for the whole family. You’ll find pops of turquoise and yellow interspersed throughout. The TV is well-hidden within a built-in entertainment console that also has room for stylish vases and books. The large plant in the corner mirrors the greenery outside, which will be a highlight when the curtains are opened.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL FAMILY ROOM IDEA

Creative Family Room Ideas by DKOR Interiors

This family room has two sections, one for relaxation and one for dining. As a result, we have a multifunctional and beautiful space. In the seating area, there is ample space for everyone to find a place to rest. Rather than side tables, a large central ottoman provides space to display candles, books, and other objects. Echoing the color and appearance of the ottoman are the two works of art behind the sectional sofa and the bubble chandelier, which add an airy and playful quality to the space. We also love that this family room is located next to the breakfast area of the home because it allows everyone to relax as well as eat together at the same time.

WATERFRONT FAMILY ROOM

Creative Family Room Ideas by DKOR Interiors

This waterfront family room project oozes sophistication with an upscale, nautical feel and stunning views. The wooden ceiling panels combined with the sleek white furniture make the space reminiscent of a yacht’s interiors. While the room is immaculate, it is also very liveable with lots of comfy seating and a built-in TV. There is an emphasis on organic materials and textures, including the wooden block side table and faux-stone wallcovering that makes this room feel fresh and contemporary.

Interior designers like to think of the ceiling as the fifth wall, so don’t make the mistake of thinking it doesn’t matter! The wood-paneled ceiling above is a focal point of the room and without it, the space wouldn’t feel as warm or inviting. If you need some ceiling design inspiration, browse through some of the creative ways we’ve used ceilings in past projects.

BRIGHT FAMILY ROOM

Creative Family Room Ideas by DKOR Interiors

This family room project is as fresh as a spring day! It has an all-white foundation and pops of bright green and orange. The stunning marble floors automatically make the space seem luxe, however, it’s not the warmest material for bare feet. Our designers have added an area rug both to add coziness as well as to define the more intimate seating area from the rest of the space, which leads into the kitchen. This family room is purpose-driven, with lots of details that make it more user-friendly, from the laptop table that fits neatly over the sofa edge to the built-in storage cabinets and shelving. The gallery wall of family photos showcases fun memories in a sleek way while also adding more color to the space.
