This year’s Thanksgiving might look a bit different. But no matter how you’re celebrating—with your…
Back to school usually means new backpacks, lunchboxes, and clothes. But this year, it might look a little different for you and your family, as online learning or a hybrid model are the norm across the country. If your kids are going to school from home this semester, consider investing in a dedicated kids desk area just for them. It’s been shown to improve focus, helping kids feel like they’re at school—or at least not sitting right next to their video games or devices.
Even if your kids are going back to school in the traditional way, a special spot to do homework at night can still improve their focus.
The interior designers at DKOR have pulled together three looks from some of our favorite stores (think Target and Crate & Barrel) for any style that will make design-minded parents happy.
Each look has a few key ingredients in addition to a desk and chair: a lamp for task lighting, a rug to make the area feel cozy, and either a calendar or pinboard to keep track of events and accomplishments.
From modern to traditional, these kids desk area ideas run the gamut and provide your little ones a super study spot. Take a peek at our picks!
Kids Desk Area Ideas
We hope you like the recommendations our designers prepared. This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.
Look 1: Charmingly Traditional
The centerpiece of this sweetly traditional look is the showstopper of a desk. From the spindle legs to the storage hutch, it provides the right dose of style and practicality. An tufted desk chair—adjustable for extra comfort—is the perfect pair for the white desk.
We love the pale blue hue on the chair for a casual touch. The same color is picked up in the traditional-style rug.
For accessories, a calendar to mark down important events, like Zoom playdates or parent-teacher conferences, is key. To keep the look just right for kids, we brought in a bit of whimsy with an elephant-shaped lamp.
Look 2: Whimsically Traditional
This transitional kids desk area is a mix of traditional, modern, and definitely eclectic. A traditional campaign-style desk grounds the look, while a curvy, streamlined desk chair keeps it fresh.
For comfort underfoot, a tribal-pattern printed rug in white and charcoal is brought in. To ensure the look isn’t taking itself too seriously, we added in a unicorn bust lamp. It’ll make your kiddo smile after some long hours doing online learning.
Above the desk, we recommend hanging geometric cork boards and pinning up pictures of their friends, art projects, and other accomplishments. We especially love making this a rotating art gallery to show off their creative side.
An old-school tic-tac-toe board provides a break from screen time when necessary.
Look 3: Globally Modern
If you’ve got a budding globetrotter on your hands, look no further than this chic modern look to keep their travel bug at bay during the school year.
A modern white-and-wood desk is a neutral centerpoint, especially when paired with a classic herringbone-patterned rug.
For a pop of color, we brought in a blue molded plastic chair with a bold brass base. The combo screams mid-century modern dreams. Continuing the theme of color, a bright calendar can be hung above the desk.
On the desk are a stylish pairing: A black-and-brass globe paired with a similarly hued giraffe-shaped lamp. The lamp to illuminate their homework when necessary and the globe to inspire them when we can all travel the globe again.
Hopefully we’ve inspired you to make a little change in your home—a special study spot for your kids. Whether they’re distance learning online or fully on campus, these kids’ desk area ideas will make their back to school just a bit more special.
