AND THE WINNER’S ARE….

When working on ten to twelve International interior design projects simultaneously, all with similar styles and at different stages at any given moment, we are always searching for ways to challenge ourselves to ensure that each project has its own identity.

Let’s face the cold facts: Interior Design in Miami is raising the bar globally and in order for us to stay on the cutting edge of the industry, we need to push ourselves in unconventional ways for inspiration. If you have been following our work at DKOR, you’re familiar with the importance of the first step to every project: Establishing a strong concept from the beginning that carries throughout the entire project. Then, from design development (creating those outstanding design features that we’re known for) to the accessories on the coffee table, everything needs to speak to each other and have a harmonious feel throughout the home.

So in an effort to create a unique focus for each and every interior design project, in the past few months, we’ve created an exercise that we like to call “Battle of the Noun!” Here’s what this fun, creative and inspiring exercise entails:

1. First, we spend a few minutes reviewing our initial client interview notes as we look for patterns or little clues that our clients give us about themselves. It could be a hand movement that they do often, or a story that they tell us about themselves. Any of these little things can trigger inspiration for us to hone in on their individuality and how we can apply it to their home.

2. Then, we split up into a few groups and search for a “NOUN” that we can use as a catalyst for our concept. With only a few minutes to come up with a “NOUN”, we come back to the group and present to our “moderator” why our team’s idea is the idea we should commit to for the remainder of our project.

These “Battles” have not only proved to be extremely effective in our work but they have also been an amazing team building exercise. The thinking process is timed and limited, which encourages each individual to go with their ‘gut’ and follow through wth their original and creative ideas. We also include all team members of DKOR to play – from project managers to the accounting department to the designers. This guarantees that every single person on the DKOR team has a part and say in every single project. And this is a very crucial part of the DKOR culture – involvement, trust and reliability from all of our team members.

Example: Check out how a winning noun, “DIAMOND”, turned into a stunning design feature in one of our current projects…
